Most Jewellery can be rinsed or scrubbed gently to get rid of dirt but this is not the case with pearls. Pearls are a timeless accessory that pairs elegantly with almost any outfit, which means they can suffer a lot of general wear and tear around the string, damage that occurs is most often through oil, dirt or other contaminants.

The string that holds pearls together can succumb to dirt and grease, which causes the string to become weak and frayed over time. This can lead to the string breaking completely and could mean you lose some of your pearls. It is most noticeable by discolouration, dirt accumulations, stretched areas of the string plus generally tired and overused. 

If you see that the string has any of these characteristics occurring to it, especially near the drill holes of the pearls where dirt accumulates, then bring them in as soon as possible.  The longer your pearls are left in this state, the harder it will be to get restrung since the thread could get stuck in the drill hole.
